We all want to find ways to keep our skin beautiful and free of wrinkles. Since the skin is the first visible sign of aging, it is also the most important dermatological problem.
Collagen, which is found in dermal connective tissues, contributes to the firmness and smoothness of the skin. It is important for maintaining the structure of the body and is called the body's cement, which holds everything in place. However, due to internal (hormones, genetics) and external factors (diet, stress, smoking, UV pollution), the collagen structure can be disorganized and destroyed. Indeed, all of these factors generate oxidative stress through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxidative stress leads to a cascade of events, including inflammation, and to qualitative and quantitative loss of collagen (collagen fibers become smaller and depleted).
Preclinical and clinical experiments investigating the effects of oral collagen peptide supplementation have shown that fish collagen hydrolysates can stimulate collagen synthesis and inhibit skin damage (induced by UV) through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
The conclusion also states that oral intake of fish collagen peptides can also contribute to maintaining skin smoothness, hydration, elasticity and reducing wrinkles on the skin. These studies have mainly focused on the effects of daily doses of 5 g to 10 g of fish collagen peptides.
In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, Weishardt evaluated the effects of its specific fish collagen peptides (Naticol®) on signs of skin aging after oral administration of 2.5 g/day for 8 and 12 weeks.
Clinically proven efficacy. This study was conducted in 95 mature women with an average age of 55.6 years, in parallel groups, receiving a daily dose of 2.5 g of specific fish collagen peptides (Naticol®) or placebo for 12 weeks.
Skin biomechanics and clinical assessment of facial wrinkles and facial skin uniformity were assessed after 8 and 12 weeks of treatment. A user satisfaction questionnaire and Investigator Global Efficacy Assessment (IGEA) were also used.
Improvement of skin elasticity. Skin biomechanics results showed a significant improvement in skin elasticity for Naticol® after 8 and 12 weeks.
Clinical outcome for facial wrinkles. Clinical assessment of facial wrinkles was performed by an experienced clinician using the Bazin-Doublet's atlas. Clinical assessment of perioral and crow's feet wrinkles from baseline showed a significant reduction in the mean wrinkle score at 12 weeks. The figure shows the reduction in the median clinical score for perioral wrinkles.
Facial skin homogeneity and radiance. A visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess the level of facial skin homogeneity.

Conclusion: The latest clinical study by Weishardt demonstrates the efficacy of 2.5 g Naticol®/day on skin firmness, radiance and complexion.
