What is LACTULOSE?

What is LACTULOSE?

The active ingredient of Prelaksan is lactulose. It has been used in the treatment of constipation for over 40 years. During this time, lactulose has been well studied and is an ideal laxative, which significantly differs from traditional drugs in its safety and effectiveness in relieving constipation. Lactulose was discovered by the Austrian pediatrician Petueli in 1948. Finding out the cause of dysbacteriosis in formula-fed children, he isolated a substance from human milk that activated the growth of the protective intestinal microflora (bifido- and lactobacteria) and called it lactulose.

Studies have shown that when feeding a child with infant formula (milk) with the addition of 2% lactulose, the bifidobacteria index increased to 90%.

When lactulose was included in adult dairy products, the number of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli increased from 7.5 to 57%, and the number of E. coli was reduced 100-fold!

Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is made from whey.

There are no enzymes in the human body that are capable of hydrolyzing it.

The whole secret of lactulose is that this substance passes through the gastrointestinal tract and reaches the colon unchanged, unlike ordinary sugars.

Once in the colon, lactulose serves as food for the growth and development of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli - beneficial microorganisms for our health.

Lactulose has a moderate osmotic (and, accordingly, laxative) effect. Under the influence of bacterial enzymes, it breaks down into low-molecular acids. As a result, osmotic pressure increases, the inflow of fluid into the intestine increases and, consequently, the volume of feces increases, its consistency becomes looser and bowel movements are facilitated.

The uniqueness of this carbohydrate is that, unlike other sugars, it does not support the growth of harmful bacteria, which is the main cause of dental caries. The calorie content of lactulose is minimal.

In childhood, lactulose is produced in small quantities by the body itself. With age, the quantitative content of bifidobacteria in the large intestine decreases, where pathogenic bacteria begin to prevail.

According to Mechnikov, the growth of putrefactive flora is the main cause of aging. Therefore, lactulose is an indispensable remedy for the elderly

In the world, it is the only substance with which hepatic encephalopathy is treated.

Since lactulose has no toxic effect, this drug is one of the safest laxatives and is suitable for long-term use.

Properties of lactulose:

• stimulates the growth of beneficial microflora

• inhibits the activity of pathogenic bacteria

• provides protection against intestinal infection

• reduces the load on the liver

• activates local immunity

• stimulates the synthesis of vitamins

• protects against the formation of stones in the liver

• reduces the entry of neurotoxins into the blood

• promotes the absorption of minerals

• activates intestinal functions
